EXTENSION IN-SERVICE TRAINING


The annual NC-140 meeting will be held November 14-16, 1996 at the Kellogg Biological Station (KBS), Hickory Corners, Michigan (near Battle Creek). The meeting will begin at 8:30 am on Thursday, November 14 and will conclude at 3:00 pm on Saturday, November 16 (see attached meeting agenda). In addition, participants will have an opportunity to tour the Southwest Fruit Industry on Wednesday, November 13.

Additionally, there will be two other overlapping and concurrent meetings being conducted at the same site; Great Lakes Fruit Extension In-Service Training for advisors working in Michigan, New York and Ontario and the NE-183 Apple Varieties Committee Meeting. Since there are people wanting to participate in these other meetings, we have included an agenda and related options on the registration form.

Great Lakes Fruit Extension In-Service Meeting, November 11 and 12,

This group will convene at KBS on Monday and Tuesday followed by optional participation in the Southwest Michigan tour on Wednesday, November 13. This group is being organized for the first time with principle participants being field extension agents and state specialists form Michigan, New York and Ontario. The group plans on meeting every two years at either the Michigan or New York sites. The purpose of our annual In-service training meeting is to; foster communication among fruit extension agents, provide an informal opportunity for researchers and
specialists to update agents on new findings and provide an opportunity for feedback to researchers. Topics include tree and small fruit culture, physiology, economics, engineering, pests, etc.

This group will convene on Tuesday, November 12 at KBS with an open business meeting agenda being conducted from 8:30 am to 5 pm. Optional participation in the Southwest Michigan Fruit Tour on Wednesday, November 13.

Registration, Meals and Lodging

A registration form will accompany this mailing. Because of the varied interests of many fruit workers, the form was arranged to accommodate a flexible schedule. Lodging may be had at the KBS facility which provides dormitory style accommodations. Registrants can opt to stay in single, double, triple or quad arrangements at a cost of $39, $28, $22 and $18 per night per person, respectively. The apartments are supplied with bed linen, blankets and towels with an adjoining shared bath. Meals will be mostly taken at the dining hall which offers a variety of entrees, buffet style. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner will cost $20 per day. A daily facility usage fee and snacks for breaks will add $7 per day, depending on the agenda for the day. Bus transport will cost $20 per person for each of the two trips planned. Other meeting rooms are available at KBS to accommodate other subcommittee meetings. Some rooms will have a telephone in the room. Participants may be reached at the facility day or night by using the telephone number (616) 671-2400. A map will accompany the registration form to help participants get to KBS. KBS is located 20 minutes from the Kalamazoo Airport (which is primarily served by commuter lines from Chicago). KBS is 2.5 hours by auto from Chicago and Detroit and 75 minutes by auto from Lansing and Grand Rapids airports. Directions to KBS: I-94 (which runs between Detroit and Chicago) to exit 80 (Sprinkle Road head North), turn right (East) on Gull Road (aka M-89) go through the town of Richland, turn left (North) on 40th street, turn left (West) on B Avenue, follow signs to KBS.

Arrangements will also be made to assist those with transport needs for departure flights.
